Newmarket Medical Practice opened at its present site in the spring of 2001. The partners had previously practised in Bridge Street Surgery where there had been a practice for over 150 years. We have an open list and accept patients living up to nine miles from the surgery. The doctors work as a partnership and you may usually consult the doctor of your choice.

Changes can be seen within all aspects of the NHS in order to meet current demands.Newmarket Medical Practice is constantly assessing the needs of the local population and evaluating the services it offers. Therefore you may find that services change from time to time to reflect local demands. We aim to communicate these to you through our regular newsletters.

Newmarket Medical Practice has many clinics for different areas of health including: General nursing clinic, phlebotomy, anticoagulant monitoring, community nursings service, maternity. In addition specialised clinics are in operation: Minor operations, family planning and well person screening.

We are prepared for the flu season, are you?

Flu is a highly infectious virus which affects your respiratory tract – your nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms can include high fever, chills, headache, sore throat, dry cough, aching muscles and joints.

A flu vaccination is the best defence available, providing up to 90% protection.

The vaccine contains a viral protein that enables your immune system to make antibodies. These antibodies protect against the strains of the flu virus predicted by the World Health Organisation as the most likely to hit the UK. Protection develops a week after receiving the vaccination and last for at least three months

As patients over 65years old are protected for approximately 3months, having the vaccination too early could put patients at risk.

So we have scheduled our walk-in flu clinics, to provide our patients with the best care possible. These walk-in clinics are to be held on:

Saturday 14th October 9am -1pm

Saturday 11th November 9am - 1pm

Benefits of having your flu injection at the Surgery:

  • The surgery has access to your full medical records.
  • If you are entitled, you can also have your shingles and pneumonia vaccine at the same time.
  • You can have your height, weight and blood checked if needed.
  • If you have an appointment to see a clinician from October and you are eligible, you can have your free vaccine all in one visit.
  • You can support your local surgery by attending the clinics and keep this service available for all in the community, now and in the future.

You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you:

  • are 65 years of age or over
  • are pregnant
  • have certain medical conditions
  • are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility
  • receive a carer's allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill

Hearing Impairment:

The surgery provide a hearing loop system at the main reception desk. We also have a portable hearing loop which can be used in any part of the surgery to assist patients during consultations. We operate a patient call screen in our waiting room as a visual aid for our patients.

Patients can now order their repeat prescription and book a number of appointments online. We have introduced a text messaging service to remind patients of their appointment date and time. We hope to expand this service in the future to assist out hearing impaired patients.

Patients that have hearing aids can now bring along their book and receive new batteries at our Dispensary instead of the going to hospital. We stock most popular brands in, however if you require a different type we can order them in for you. We can usually get them in within the week. This is proving to be yet another popular service we provide to our patients.
